Bus Station, Birkenhead
The brief for this multi-award winning project was to change perceptions of public transport with a high quality, safe and efficient public transport facility which would initiate further regeneration of the heart of Birkenhead .
- The design is a curved colonnade, linking all bus bays in a continuous arc and was based on a careful study of bus and pedestrian movement patterns.
- the building was designed to be energy-efficient, low-carbon and low-maintenance, incorporating passive solar energy and natural stack ventilation.
- Particular emphasis was placed on safety for the young, disabled and elderly, minimising hazards and creating a pedestrian-friendly environment with careful attention given to signage, orientation and travel information.
- Robust hard and soft landscape creates an attractive, efficient environment using high-quality materials and clearly defining routes and activities.
