FORMER WOODFORD AERODROME, STOCKPORT AND CHESHIRE

Former Woodford Aerodrome

The 205ha former aerodrome site in the Green Belt became surplus to requirements in 2011.The site includes two areas of significant built development of hangars, paint shops and assembly buildings.  These are designated Major Existing Developed Sites (MEDS) in the Green Belt and make up some 42ha of the site.

The practice worked with Stockport and Cheshire East Councils to ensure that there was a robust yet flexible strategic planning policy to support the redevelopment of the site for a residential-led mixed use masterplan. We provided masterplanning consultancy support in promoting the site as an Opportunity Site within Stockport Council’s Core Strategy. A Steering Group was set up with Senior Council Officers and a number of working groups looking at specific aspects around the site’s redevelopment including – transport, landscape, heritage, community infrastructure.

In support of the above process the practice produced a series of masterplan options that explored:

  • Mix of uses including residential, employment, retail, leisure and community
  • Green and Blue Infrastructure, landscape and public open space framework
  • Location and extent of development within and beyond the MEDS boundaries
  • Landscape and visual impact
  • Community infrastructure provision
  • Viability and infrastructure costs.
